Hi again, I just had a supplier and fellow fibre artist, ask me if I was still hand felting? In a word YES! Let me explain. Felt fabric can be machine made, think insulation batts. These machines are available for domestic use also, and are basically a number of dry felting needles working together to make felt. Dry felting is not the same as wet felting. The two shouldnt be confused and dry felting is mainly used for making toys and embellishments. Wet felting makes fabric that can be used like normal fabric. Cut, sewn and shaped. By nature, felted fabric likes to stay flat and requires a great deal of force and patience to shape, especially into a hat. Our hats are shaped by hand, which needs hours, yes hours! of hand rubbing to hold its shape. Some fibre artists use an electric sander to speed things up. Not here! Its all done by hand. Generally a hat will take 6-8 hours to complete, before it is stiffened. There is alot of work and time, not to mention strength, that goes into making our hats. Im not putting down or questioning other artists methods, just reminding everyone, that our felted hats and bags, are genuinely Handmade and always will be. Have a great weekend and stay safe, Lisa x
