This small-group experience will be held at Harmonious Homestead in north central Columbus. The workshop will begin with a tour and conclude with a question and answer session around a campfire, weather permitting. Please wear weather appropriate clothing as we will be outside as much as possible. Small-scale Restoration Agriculture Talk & Book Signing - In this presentation, Mark Shepard will show how perennial-based sustainable agriculture principles can be applied to small spaces including backyards and urban farm gardens. By intentionally designing and planting perennial ecosystems, we remove carbon dioxide from the air, build soil, enhance wildlife habitat and biodiversity, produce food, medicine and fuel, prevent soil erosion, and begin the creation of ecologically sustainable human habitats. Modeled on nature, these systems are diverse and resilient. Mark runs New Forest Farms LLC in southwest Wisconsin, one of the most developed and productive perennial farms in the US He believes, and demonstrates on his farm, that native-inspired polycultures can feed humans while enhancing the wild ecosystems without synthetic inputs or excessive annual cropping. Free Public Lecture, and Restoration Agriculture Design workshop announcements Internationally-known sustainable agriculture speaker, advocate, author, and practitioner, MARK SHEPARD will be giving a free public lecture on “The Restoration Agriculture farm - A Model for Productive and Profitable Sustainable Agriculture in the 21 st Century” at 7:00pm, Thursday, October 9 in the Silk Auditorium, Stark State College of Technology, 6200 Frank Avenue NW, North Canton, Ohio 44720 (directions here: starkstate.edu/content/directions-maps). This free lecture is an intro to a 3-day Restoration Agriculture Design workshop taking place Oct. 9-11 at Stark State College and Creekview Ridge Farm, located in Minerva,OH. There will also be a free tour of Creekview Ridge Farm (9047 Magnet Rd NE, Minerva, OH 44657), sponsored by the Ohio Ecological Food and Farming Association (OEFFA) from noon until 4pm on Sunday, October 12. (Mark will not be a part of the tour on Oct. 12th) In 1995, Mark Shepard and his family moved to the hills of Southwest Wisconsin to start a new kind of farm. Instead of just growing annual grains, vegetables, or livestock, they wanted to establish a perennial farm, modelled on native ecosystems, to produce abundant food, fiber, and fuel while restoring critical ecosystem services. New Forest Farm (newforestfarm.net/) is now one of the most developed and productive perennial farms in North America - growing abundant crops and livestock, while sequestering carbon, building soil, recharging groundwater, and enhancing wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Mark also promotes Restoration Agriculture practices through his company, Forest Ag Enterprises forestag/. This type of farm stands in contrast to traditional conventional farms that grow staple crops such as corn, soybeans, meat or dairy products on an annual basis. A mature perennial farm will out-produce a conventional farm several times over without the negative impacts associated with annual crop cultivation such as reliance on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, significant use of fossil fuels, soil degradation and erosion. Marks lecture, and the accompanying workshop and farm tour, will focus on the concepts and practices that are employed to plan and develop a perennial farm on the Restoration Agriculture model. This lecture will be of interest to farmers, horticulturalists, Master Gardeners, landscape and environmental design professionals, agriculture support professionals, Farm Bureau, FFA and 4-H groups, life and agricultural sciences students, educators, media professionals, or anyone interested in issues of food and agricultural sustainability.
