Hi all, Im not sure if this is the right forum, so apologies if not.... My girl Mindy, who turned 11 in September, has been struggling with her back legs & front knees for some time. Knew she had arthritis & for a time we thought she had CDRM but have since gladly discovered that is not the case. On referral to Super Vets / Fitzpatricks, shes had an MRI which revealed a compressed disk in her lower back, giving her sciatic-type symtoms. She has had 2 steroid epidural injections & I think is now much more comfortable, however, because she is still stumbling & tripping at times, they think it is her arthritic hips that are more of the issue. So, they have changed her medication & want her to commence hydro-therapy, with a possibility of a hip-replacement operation. Obviously, I am frantic about the right thing to do.. Its a big op, with approx. 3-4 months recovery, if all goes well. We are due to see them again in approx. 10 days, when I need to decide the best way forward. Im anxious to give her the best possible option, with an outcome whereby she will regain better, pain-free mobility, to allow her to chase a stick (her favourite occupation!) & not suffer with pain afterwards. I dont know if the op will give her more options & benefits than medication alone, but equally I want to be realistic about the benefit she will get against the trauma & healing process alongside her natural life-span. Has anyone proceeded with a hip replacement in their dog of a similar age or have other experience of other less radical options? Thank you in advance.... If only we had a crystal ball....
