Hi all. It has just come to my attention that our own John Greally Âû has been forced to remove Âû from his name today. This is a gross affront to John and the phenomenal work he has put into promoting everything good about the autistic community. It is also a clear blow against Autistic Union and everything noble and admirable that it stands for. It is a slap in the face for each one of us. Lets be totally clear on this: when you see someones name on Facebook with the Âû tag, it means they have read the 10 Principles of the Autistic Union, have been inspired by them, and chosen to publicly mark themself out as an advocate for everything good they represent for autistics, online and offline. This is by extension also an insult to each autistic person, whether they choose to self-identify using the Âû suffix or not. This is an open challenge to each one of us to cow down and submit, deny our identity, recede into the shadows. I will not accept this. I am who I am. I am insulted both personally and as a member of this community. When I first found this page, and read those 10 Principles, I knew this was my home. I wanted to touch the screen where the words lay. They affirmed everything positive I knew about myself and about our community. I felt proud. I also felt a responsibility to share the message. Ive come to know some of the many, many things John has (often quietly, with no fuss) done for autistics. He is a person I admire. He is someone who has inspired me to do more. And so I have. Far from enough. Probably never enough. But there is nothing like the challenge of some impossible task. Autistics through the ages have made it their business to overcome the impossible. We are uniquely equipped to achieve this. And we will. So, let this incident be a focus. Not something to dwell on. Something to challenge us. We are greater than this.
