Hi all, Rucksack Club meeting this Wednesday, 11 September, 18.45, at St Andrews Church Hall on corner of Gordon St and Goodenough St. Usual trip updates, plus... Ocean Treasure: Out of our Depth? Deep Sea Minerals in the Pacific Mineral deposits have been found across the seabed of the Pacific Ocean, containing copper, nickel, gold, platinum, and rare earth elements: metals in high- demand on today’s market. Deposits are located within territorial waters of Pacific Islands, including Fiji, giving each country the legal right to exploit those minerals, and reap the financial benefits. Prospectors talk of a new ‘billion-dollar’ industry: an exciting vision of future wealth for small island developing states. So what’s the hitch? Hannah Lily, Legal Advisor for the Deep Sea Minerals Project, will talk about practical challenges, and environmental and governance concerns. Hope to see you there!
