Hi all, Update on our travel We have sailed through the great barrier reef to Cairns, we are seeing some interesting sites as we sail through this vast expanse of water. Again realising how big and interesting the oceans of the world are. We have seen evidence of the waves breaking over the coral reefs, sharks and turtles. We enjoyed Sidney and brisbane, both different styles of cities and different lifestyles. Brisbane is set on a vast river, and as we cruised down the river on a paddle steamer, drinking coffee and eating cakes we saw how the other half live with their boats moored at their jetties at the foot of their gardens and riverside homes. Sydney what can I say - fantastic place and the beer in the oldest pub in Sydney was perfect for a hot sunny day. Arrived in cairns (20th) and it was raining and hot (30), took a trip to the rainforest on a train and skyline cabin. It was a very interesting day in which the cable car took us into the rainforest and high into the mountains, the views were spectacular, even through the rain. We walked through sections of the rainforest, it was spectacular even if it was through a tropical downpour, massive trees, exotic greenery and spectacular waterfalls. All I can say is Wow. We then visited Kurenda, a village in the rainforest, saw the wildlife, local artists and craft work, spectacular bright blue butterflies and parrots. Of course also had a local aussie brew and food. We completed the trip by returning to cairns on a train through the rainforest, the track was built for the gold miners in the deep distant past. The views were magnificent and the engineering skills remarkable. It was a wonderful experience and memory. Didnt need a shower as tropical rain is better than a power shower. Currently on route through the barrier reef to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and visited a volcanic island on route which is the perfect description of a remote castaway island (iwe island) surrounded by a coral reef and locals fishing with a spear on the reefs. We will arrive in Papua New Guinea on sunday, based on the tour talk we are in for some experience. Just hope the locals are friendly and not hungry! It was stated that in the past some tribes in the area liked womens arms for a tasty treat. This will be a real experience visiting uncharted islands, only a few cruise ships have visited the area. Decided we will refrain from getting the local tattoos or the bone through the nose.
