Hi everyone, I would like to encourage you to attend a talk on the life of a media and internet lawyer delivered by Ashley Hurst from Olswang. (2pm/14th March. G.32 Liberty Building) For the aspiring media and internet lawyers among you, Leeds alumnus and Olswang Partner Ashley Hurst will be visiting us on the 14th March to talk about life as a media and internet lawyer. Ashley studied law at Leeds before joining Hogan Lovells for his training contract and later moving to media and technology specialists Olswang to concentrate on media and internet disputes. At Olswang Ashley has been at the cutting edge of the development of media and internet law in recent years and is now recognised as a leader in this field. The legal directories recently described him as an up-and-coming powerhouse in online defamation. Amongst his cases, he acted for Mathew Firsht and Applause Store Productions in the first libel case to go to trial about Facebook, obtained privacy injunctions for a number of footballers and celebrities in the controversial Superinjunction Spring of 2011, and acted for News International in relation to the phone hacking scandal, which involved preparing Rupert and James Murdoch for their televised grilling before a Parliamentary Select Committee. In addition to his media clients, Ashley acts for a number of the worlds leading internet companies, including Microsoft, TripAdvisor, Expedia, and Facebook and was closely involved in the drafting of parts of the Defamation Act 2013. Amongst a few war stories, he will be talking about how the growth in mobile technology and social media has dramatically changed the role of todays media lawyers. He will also offer a few tips on how to get into this increasingly popular area of the law.
