Hi everyone! Im new here and new to forest gardening and Permaculture in general and have a big question I hope you all can help me with! First, a short history... We have an urban farm (1/8 acre) with chickens, bees and lots of veggies beds, herbs and fruit trees...all put in using companion plantings and bio-intensive methods...all organic, all on drip irrigation and we have some water catchment...we built this all over the past 7 years and have *just decided to sell our home and move to a rural piece of property as renters to pursue our dreams of living closer to Nature and treading a bit lighter on our planet (the opportunity could not be turned down)! For the first year we will have access to 1/2 acre. If we decide to stay beyond the first year, we will be given access to more and more of the property (the whole property is ~6 acres). So, my question is this...Where do we start? And how do we start on our 1/2 acre piece so that when/if we are granted access to more land, it will flow nicely into itself? The land is fairly flat, surround by 100 year old cottonwoods and has excellent water rights (were in NM). It also hasnt been used agriculturally since the 1930s aside from a small portion that is planted with alfalfa as a cover crop. Any links, books, tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!
