Hi, everyone. We will be bringing our beautiful boy home to our new place in January. If were lucky, well have a friend of his right away as well. We are in a new home and this will be our first time having our horse(s) in our own barn. The barn has great bones with 7 very large stalls. It is cleaning up very well after having been unused for several years. My question is about bedding. Ive removed every bit of the surface bedding, not only because it is old and dusty but also because I suspect there were some rat poisons used on the surface. After taking out about 18 wheelbarrows of bedding from 3 of the stalls, I stopped and started digging into the ground beneath. There is good, tightly packed dirt with some clay in it. This is Florida where sand is the default but I dont hit any sand until about 4 feet down. There is no cement below (although the center aisle is cemented). There are some rubber mats but I am removing them because I am not a big fan of them but more importantly, they are not cut to fit the stalls. I plan to use a LOT of pellet bedding (Tractor Supply) for the first layer over the dirt and then thick shavings above that. Does anyone have any advice or alternate recommendations? Thanks for your help! Heres my boy wondering why the heck I am sneaking up on him again. :-)
