Hi extended Yabsley family and cousins, I hope everyone is - TopicsExpress

Hi extended Yabsley family and cousins, I hope everyone is having a great start to 2015. For me, 2014 was a wild crazy ride but the twins are about to turn one (in 2 weeks!)!! We survived one year!! Previously I attached our holiday card that shows all three of the kids during the past few months. I know I am constantly sending out requests for help on the tree and most of you Ive never even met. But, I plod along hoping one day to meet some of you and to eventually pass it all along to the next generation as a way to show where we all come from and how we are all connected in this huge world. In addition to holiday greetings, Im also writing with another request :-) In the past several years there have been some amazing advancements in the field of genetic genealogy. There is so much you can do with it now. During this past year, Ive been so lucky to have had many folks step up and take some of the genetic genealogy tests --which really helped me do some neat family tree research. Two of the folks were Yabsley cousins and one helped confirm a family connection highly suspected based on paper documents. I didnt match the other but we are 6th cousins so it is expected that we wouldnt share any DNA given the number of generations between he and I. In 2015, I have an ambitious goal and it will be solely focused on the Yabsley side of the family. I want to get as many Yabsley cousins to test and instead of just asking you guys (begging actually), Im willing to put up the cash!! I will be willing to purchase the kits...all I need is your shipping address for the kits and your promise to follow the instructions so that I can utilize the genealogy sharing tools to do what I discuss below (NOTE: there is NO medical or private information shared!!!). I will put up $2,000 for kits so hurry to commit to take advantage (sorry, no new car...). It is very important for as many people as possible to test because the inheritance of DNA is random and bits of the “Yabsley” DNA is lost each generation (also note that even if your Yabsley ancestor is way back, you would still possibly have some “Yabsley” DNA! Which brings up another important point – it is most important to get the oldest Yabsley person in your family to test, they have the most “Yabsley” DNA. However, if folks are not confortable, then I am also very interested in anybody willing to test. Below I provide some links that describe something that I am totally fascinated with and I hope youll be intrigued enough to step up and let me buy you a test :-) --if you have enough family members test, you can begin the process of building an ancestors genome -- now why would I even want to do that? Actually for several reasons - Im a science genetic geek and I think this is super cool but from a family history standpoint - we can use that genome to assist with matching together Yabsley lines with no known connection to ours!! Each generation you go back increases the likelihood you would match somebody. Also, as noted in the links, your an actually begin to learn a bit about your ancestor from so long ago – eye color, hair color, etc. Sadly, my dad died when I was only 15 so I dont have the option of having him test. I am trying very hard to get his sister or her daughter to test as they are his closest relatives. But even if they do take the test, I need as many folks as possible to do the test, especially if we want to go back several generations. One set of links describing this thegeneticgenealogist/2014/12/09/recreating-grandmothers-genome-part-1/and thegeneticgenealogist/2014/12/14/recreating-grandmothers-genome-part-2/ And a similar thing done one another family: youtube/watch?v=xiApcdRuWsM and thegeneticgenealogist/2014/12/16/ancestrydna-recreates-portions-genome-david-speegle-two-wives/ With help from all (many) of you, Ill start with my trying to rebuild a genome for my dad but if enough of you will test then we could try and continue back through the generations- maybe back to the 1800s?!. For the Canada folks – we could have a challenge to get enough folks to reconstruct the genomes of George Yabsley and his wife Annie McCullough! If we can get far enough back I could write a paper similar to the links above! I think such a thing would be of interest to all of our kids and grandkids hopefully. The video is from Ancestry but I can do similar work using data from any of the three major companies through a program on gedmatch. Again -- please consider this request and I am very happy to chat on phone (706-207-6824) or on skype (michael.yabsley1) if you have any questions/concerns. This type of testing has now been around 10 years and is well vetted. Folks in the US, Canada, or the UK can test with 23andme (23andme to read up on what all information you can receive) -males and females are eligible to test. Those in Canada and the UK can choose to get medical information from the testing but I will NOT have access to any of that information. For folks in the US, you can also test with familytreeDNA which provides similar data (although no data on Y- or mitochondrial lines, isn’t as fancy as 23andme, and is more expensive – the company has some real benefits but is more for specialized testing). Folks in Australia- I dont think I can swing testing of you guys right now as only one of the major testing companies will provide the testing in Australia but the shipping costs are prohibitive--I only have $2,000 to donate to this cause). If you are interested in Australia I can read a bit more or we could do it if you have a trip planned to the U.S., UK, or Canada. Or maybe if not many folks take me up on my offer (sad), I’d have extra funds. For now, I can only justify paying for the kit if you are a known or suspected descendant of Richard Yabsley and Jenny Tapley - my 7th great-grandparents!! If you arent sure if you belong to this line, I have some documents in this facebook section but you can also ask me. Note that if folks from other Yabsley lines are interested in testing Id be happy to talk with you about and train you on understanding the results. If interested you can drop me a PM or email me ([email protected]) and we can discuss. Or again, call or skype me for a more personal discussion. Thanks again for reading and considering this request! Have a great 2015 and heres hoping I get a bit more sleep this year, Michael -- Michael J. Yabsley, MS, PhD, FRES Associate Professor 589 D.W.
