Hi folks, In some recent discussions Ive been having, its clear that something needs to be done about racism in #TBay. Thing is, were not going to change racism in this city simply by learning more about Indians. While learning more about Indigenous sovereignties is something that might work to keep the peace in the future, the fact is, right now, white folks need to learn more about whiteness...because whiteness is a major source of the problem. White supremacy and racism are tools of settler colonialism. They work to protect the status quo. Settler colonialism is the system of dominance that works to remove Indigenous peoples from the lands so that resource extraction can take place. This has been Canadas project since 1876. While Indigenous peoples have always resisted settler colonialism, they have less power in the Canadian system than white folks precisely because white supremacy rewards those who play into maintaining the status quo (intentionally, or simply without knowing it). It is this complicity that needs to be exposed. A major part of the solution here is NOT simply to learn more about Indians, but rather its about learning more about how settler colonialism rewards those complicit with it. I call this flipping the lens. By that I mean so long as white people with good intentions want to look into Indigenous issues, whiteness (as a power construct) remains invisible. We have to put it on the table if were going to be serious about ending racism - white folks have the most power in ending racism in a white supremacist society. So, with that in mind, I want to suggest some readings that might work to inform our organizing here. This list is not exhaustive, but puts a few things on the table that might help non-Indg folks in TBay address the roots of racism.
