Hi folks posting this here as was submitted to the observer but never got published. Welcome to Cowal Indoor Bowling Club’s first report for the new season. Here is a little potted history of the club. The club first opened its doors as Kirn and Hunters Quay indoor bowling club in 1977 it was formally opened by the legend that is David Bryant. After the club ran into some difficulties in 1982 there was a transfer of ownership and a new committee took over the running of the club which was then renamed Cowal Indoor bowling club. The club has had its ups and downs since but we are now on a more even keel. A friendly but competitive spirit prevails and is encouraged with support being given by the experienced bowlers to those learning the sport. This year’s AGM will be held on Sunday the 7th of September at 7.00 PM in the club lounge. We hope for a good attendance from both existing and prospective members. The club is hoping to keep building on the success of the last three years and we will strive to keep moving forward and build on that success. Members can do their bit by inviting somebody to the club for a game (first game free) or just a look round. Obviously the club has overheads like heating and lighting, (as we all know the price always goes up never down) but because of the success of the last few years we have managed to keep fees as low as possible. This year the committee will be recommending to the A G M that we keep fees the same as last year i.e. Subs at £30 for a full member, and only £5 for a junior i.e. under 18yrs or in full time education. Rink fees are £3 for a 2 hour game and £1.50 for a junior. The gent’s team have the first league game of the season on the 27th of September versus Whiteinch. The gent’s league is going to be very challenging this year as we will be competing against some of the top clubs including Prestwick, home of four times world indoor champion Paul Foster and Auchinleck indoor bowling club which has produced several world champions the latest one being Stewart Anderson. The senior section plays their first game on the 4th of Oct, so we need the players in early. It is hoped we can get a practice game for the teams before the first game. So come on all you bowlers who would like to get to grips with the big names in this great game of ours and sign up. We also need more lady members, so it has been decided the gent’s balloted leagues will now be open to ladies at least until the number of lady members increases. There is plenty of competition for the more competitive player all through the season for example qualifying for the national championships for men and women and also seniors and junior members. We will also have play for points on Monday evening’s with the member with the most points getting a free membership the following season; there will also be balloted tournaments throughout the season, so plenty for everyone. Entry sheets for most competitions will be on the notice board from Sunday the 7th of September. The club will be open for play in the evenings from Monday the 8th and on Tuesday the 9th and Thursday the 11th doors open at 7 pm for 7.15 starts. On the evening of Monday the 15th of September there will be a FREE wappenshaw for prizes, with drinks at reduced prices. We look forward to seeing both old faces and new and wish everyone a good season. President Douglas Strachan
