Hi friends - Im forwarding you an email I received from a colleague, below. If you have a moment, do take action. In the past, this type of pressure has been very effective. Im writing because were deeply concerned about the NYTs coverage of the potential collapse of talks. The headline at the top of the NYT Middle East section on the NYT website right now is: Palestinians Defy U.S. and Israel, Leaving Peace Talks in Peril (see Jodis story here). Of course the real immediate reason that the talks are in jeopardy is because Israel reneged on its commitment to release a fourth batch of prisoners, but you dont find that out until the sixth paragraph. Were trying to generate as much response and pressure on the Times as possible as a way of influencing broader US coverage of the talks. As you know, the NYT is the most influential paper in the US and possibly the world, so if we can get them to do a decent job covering whatever happens with the talks it will go a long way towards setting the tone in the rest of the US media. We were hoping you and your allies could help generate as many letters to the editor, CCing the foreign editor and public editor as possible, criticizing the Times for seemingly blaming the failure of talks on the Palestinians when its Israels refusal to honor its pledge to the Palestinians and the US to release prisoners that has caused the apparent breakdown, and its provocative and illegal Israeli actions like settlement building and home demolitions that have doomed the talks from the start.
