Hi friends I wanted to address a spirited conversation that started over me posting my support of the anti gun demonstrations in Santa Barbara. To be clear: I am opposed to gun ownership but totally empathize with people who disagree with me. This is a very emotional issue and I am moved by the pain that the people of Santa Barbara are going through. My sister was nearly killed several years ago when a gunman murdered 6 of her coworkers and friends in a nice safe mall in Omaha, Nebraska. I live in a city where hundreds die needlessly from gun violence. I am also astonished at how much gun ownership increases the likelihood of killing yourself or someone you love just by having a weapon in their home. Now, does this mean I have the right to impose my will on those that disagree with me? No. I do hope that both sides can do a better job of discussing this contentious issue with each other without calling each other names or slinging base insults. Opposition and support of gun ownership are each rooted in some version of fear. Lets start there and see what solutions we can come up with. Together.
