Hi guys, just hoping for a bit of advice for myself. When I was - TopicsExpress

Hi guys, just hoping for a bit of advice for myself. When I was younger I did Scouts and then carried it on afterwards through doing the YL training at Cubs and Scouts. I left Cubs as a YL last year due to college commitments, but continued at Scouts and I am still there now. I turned 18 in July so Im now starting my training to become Scout Leader, as the old SL is now moving up to GSL. During discussions with the old SL about how I can improve upon my leadership it has been pointed out to me that I am perhaps too friendly with the YPs sometimes, acting more as a friend/older Scout than the Leader in Charge. Many of the YPs see me as no more than a Young Leader still, thinking Im there to assist the other leaders but also play around with them, despite being told that I am now the Leader in Charge. This obviously causes problems in that they dont always obey when I ask them to do things which will cause huge problems in the long run when the old SL stops regularly attending troop nights, if they still dont see me as the SL. I was wondering what people could suggest to help me transition from being their friend to their leader. Obviously I want to maintain some friendliness as I dont want to lose their respect and trust, but I understand that I need to take it down a few notches. One suggestion from the other leaders has been for leader names to be introduced for our troop, as they havent had set leader names for many years, so its always been a first name basis, but I would consider something like Skip? What are other people referred to as? And again just what advice can you give me? Sorry the long post, just wanted to give as much detail as possible! :)
