Hi ladies, i was just reading on black slave women this evening - TopicsExpress

Hi ladies, i was just reading on black slave women this evening and i stumbled on something that, makes me a proud naturalist. In the 1400s-1500s women in africa took extreme good care of their hair, they had the right combs and oils. The writer went further to say only mad women and those in mourning had untidy hair. But in 1500s when slave masters came in, hmmm, my sisters guess what these slave masters did to the black women? they cut their hair first, the writer saidit was merely the beginning of a long process of wiping out their culture and identity, to break them and make them vulnerable.when i got to this place, i was like really????, so the beauty of the black women prior to slavery was alarming, was a threat to them, they had to cut their hair to wipe out their identity. To me that speaks volumes, my hair is my identity. The writer goes further to say when women slaves got to america, they abandoned their hair.czs no one sold the products they needed, so they began hiding their hair in scarfs, negligence brought in ringwarm on their hair, so when slavery drew to its close, the black women, began using lard, beacon grease to treat her hair, then they began wanting to blend with the the white so viewed the black hair as bad hair and then white hair as gud hair,so they began using all they could, to make their hair straight even lye and potatoes. Why am i telling this story? its for you african women to be proud of your decision of going natural, because we are establishing that BLACK WOMAN identity which was taken from them, our hair is our identity and represent us, lets keep it natural, and be proud, thats our heritage.
