Hi mamas! Bethany Refugee Services has asked MTO if we can assist a refugee family that is in our area after the interest that we expressed in helping when we had a Bethany social worker speak to our group this spring. Two weeks ago, Zuhar came to the States from Somalia with her two daughters, Fartun (age 9) and Fardosa (age 7). She is a single mom, and they are living in the Boston Square apartments with very little - just a few items of furniture that were left behind. Unfortunately, the apartment they moved into had a bug infestation when they arrived, and they are going to have to move again on Friday and will not be able to take anything with them. As you can imagine, this has been an unexpected and rough beginning to their new life in the U.S. If we are able to provide them with anything, it would be a great blessing to them!! The immediate need (before Friday) is to provide towels and bedding and some clothing before their move; but there are other items that they could use as well. Zuahr and her girls are such a sweet family! The girls speak some English. They are fairly isolated where they are living - they have no family in the States, and no transportation. They also have very little in their apartment, and Bethany asked if some of the people in our church would be able/willing to help out with some basic items to get them set up. If you would like to offer her any help navigating some of their big life changes, some things that she and her daughters made need in the next few months include assistance getting to and from doctors appointments; budget counseling and help opening a bank account; school enrollment and preparation for Fartun and Fardosa; and just generally assisting them in navigating their new life in the States.
