Hi people, this one is for all those who enjoy but dont comprehend Indian classical music and would like to pick up the fundamentals. Dr Sandhya Kathavate, a vocalist of the Agra gharana, is holding a classical music appreciation workshop at Rakshak Society, Pune, on September 28. In her own words, During my 35 years of performing and teaching, one statement I have constantly come across is I enjoy classical music but do not understand it. It forced me to think whether it is possible to enjoy any classical art in totality if you do not understand the nuances and aesthetics of it...My workshop will deal with basics: what is a raga, basic taals, what is a bandish and how to differentiate between a khayal, thumri and ghazal. It will also discuss the gharanas of khayal singing and the format of a typical mehfil of 2-3 hours. Sessions will be followed by Q & A.
