Hi there! Since the question of knitting popped up in another thread, this has been puzzling me for quit a while now, so why not bring it to this group! The beginning of a chapter in the book Encyclopedia of medieval dress and textiles of the British isles c. 450-1450 (Owen-Crocker, Coatsworth & Hayward, 2012) mentions on knitting (quoting word by word) The earliest find of knitting in Europe is apparently an import from the Middle East, a piece of cotton stockinet in association with leather and probably a part of a stocking. It is from a viking grave (late 9th- early 10th century, Nore Longelse, Langeland, Denmark) and although found in 1926, remains unpublished. Of course it is clear that this knitted piece (if knitted at all) is a rarity, and obviously not locally produced, but does anyone have any more information on this? Thoughts, ideas? I mean, it would be really easy to say that the find is misintepreted and it is really nalbinding, but might there be more to this than bad research way back then and unchecked sources much later..?
