Hidden sights of a city. Recently members of our group have posted photographs of the homeless and poor from days gone by. I thought to include one of a homeless enclave that has disappeared in recent years. This photo was taken in 2006 on the old abandoned rail road tracks at Bloomingdale and Kimball. This old abandoned line is slated to be part of the “606” or Bloomingdale bike paths and trails. In 2006 this site was known by its residents (and the local police) as the point of no return. The larger tent canvases were added protection covering one room shacks constructed of a mix of wood and sheet metal. The shacks had hidden doors, and the residents had an ingenious and effective alarm system of string, running through the brush, and connected to tin cans hanging in the trees. One of the shacks had electricity borrowed from the rail road which powered an espresso machine. There were approximately two dozen residents and most were battling a drug addiction. A changing neighborhood forced the inhabitants to relocate and find a new point of no return.
