Hideyoshi, a Japanese warlord who ruled over Japan in the late 1500’s, commissioned a colossal statue of Buddha for a shrine in Kyoto. It took 50,000 men to build, but the work had scarcely been completed when the earthquake of 1596 brought the roof of the temple crashing down and wrecked the statue. In a rage, Hideyoshi shot an arrow at the fallen statue. He shouted, “I put you here at great expense and you can’t even look after your own temple.” When you put your trust in the gods of the world, they can’t look after themselves and they certainly can’t look after you. In fact, you will have to carry and sustain them. You will have to keep them propped up. The God of the Bible needs no one. He is all-sufficient. All glory, goodness, and blessedness is found in Him and Him alone. God alone can sustain you and secure you. He needs no one to support or defend him. Look to Him afresh and find in Him all that you need.
