High Line Word of the Day contrail What do you get when you mash up condensation and trail? If you mash hard enough so that some syllables go flying off irretrievably in different directions, you get contrail, which designates a streak in the sky left by an aircraft, consisting of water vapor. The term is a mid-20th century coinage of US origin, first appearing in print in the Saturday Evening Post.
