High school students quizzed on money management BOSTON (WWLP) - Eighty high school students gathered at the State House Friday to test their knowledge on financial education. Chicopee High School Senior Emily Dowd told 22News many of her classmates do not know how to manage their finances without the help of their parents. “I feel like a lot of people, in at least my school, are not prepared yet, but taking these things and doing these experiences will help us.” The Massachusetts Bankers Association teamed up with five banks to sponsor the “Common Cents” competition. In game show fashion, students answered questions about how to spend their money responsibly and how to set financial goals for themselves. It is all to support a state pilot program to see if high schools students would benefit from taking finance classes. “Teaching them to not get into debt, I think that’s the biggest thing. That it is important to get a credit card but to manage it without getting in over their head,” said Chicopee Comprehensive High School teacher Mary Paleologopoulos. Many high schools in Massachusetts do not require their students to learn about managing their money. This event hopes to change that.
