Higher education in India suffers from a lack of democratic leadership that understands its true nature. Those heading these institutions are usually the favourites of those in power. They largely implement the agenda of their masters and, therefore, do not feel the need to be accountable to the academic community. To them, accountability is personal and not institutional or societal. They undermine the autonomy of the democratic bodies of universities.; University is not about its buildings but crucially its students and faculty, their alienation damages the institution irreparably.
