Highest Chinook Salmon Abundance Ever!!! We are happy to announce the Pacific Salmon Commission recently released its highest ever Abundance Index for Northern BC Chinook salmon. For 2014, the preseason Abundance Index for Northern BC Chinook is 1.99, the highest estimate since the index began in 1999. For comparison, the final postseason index for 2012 was 1.15 and 2013 was 1.51 – Both fishing seasons we thoroughly enjoyed at our summer sanctuary at Hippa Island! The index baseline of 1.0 is based on the average abundance for the years of 1979-1982, meaning this years index of 1.99 would be almost double the abundance of that average. If this estimate is even close to being accurate, we could be in for one of our best seasons ever in 2014. See you there!
