Highlights from Week 3: Air Experiments, Go-Kart Building, Candle - TopicsExpress

Highlights from Week 3: Air Experiments, Go-Kart Building, Candle Making, Air Testing, LEGO, Whale and Dolphin Watcher Field Trip Science: What a whirlwind of a week. We began the week with an awe inspiring presentation. With foot-wide vortexing smoke rings, we learned that air is always moving and can travel in very unusual ways. These circling and speeding smoke rings were an instant hit and were soon part of alternate experiments. Jr. Campers learned about air pressure during experiences which included several different flight vehicles that were launched, floated and dropped from great heights. Parachutes, airplanes and helicopters were flying through the camp throughout the week. They also raced balloon buggy racers with the Teen Campers. They were in constant motion and even made adorable wind chimes that had included whale beads. A perfect activity to get our youngest campers excited about our Friday trip. Main & Teen Camps combined their air experiments with their candle making skills. While they were making beautiful colored and scented candles, they learned about properties of air. Through experiments with candles, they were able to suck a hard-boiled egg into a small mouth jar, and measured the amount of oxygen in the air. We experimented with Bernoulli’s Law by keeping a balloon suspended in midair nearly all day. We did use our spiraling smoke rings to knock it down once or twice. We had a visit from the Camden County Hazmat Team. They taught us of common contaminants that contribute to air pollution like hairsprays and household cleansers. They brought CO2 sensors to measure the amount each child gives off to the environment. The smaller kids gave of less while some of our counselors were full of pollution. “Don’t forget your hazmat suits!” is something I never thought I would ever say. The kids all took their own home. Art & Craft: Rainbow Loom was a crowd favorite. So many rings, bracelets necklaces and hairbands were made from each camper. They were even kind enough to be the instructors for some of the older campers that had never experienced the frenzy. They learned several knot tying techniques and made lovely handmade trinkets. The main and teen camp worked tirelessly to complete their handmade go-cart. Finally, on Thursday they painted and rode their roadsters. If you have not seen the go-kart, please see the pictures posted on Facebook: facebook/wowsciencecamp You can see we have future engineers among us! LEGO: Working as a collaborative team, our Lego team completed the design of their robot and started to program it to perform various functions. Teen campers chose to make a Godzilla movie with their creations. Using single keyframe animation, they shot a scene with full Lego props, animals, and Godzilla. Lots of creative campers on our LEGO team this summer! Whale Watching trip: If you missed this trip, I am not going to rub it in because I’m sure you could not join us for a good reason. Suffice it to say it was so much fun!!! We did see quite a few Dolphins. You can enjoy the memories on Facebook. Looking forward to another awesome week!
