Highlights from today’s FAB Music Calendar for June 13th include… June 13, 1977 – James Taylor released the first single from what was his eighth album. JT was Taylor’s initial release after moving over to Columbia Records and was among the most critically acclaimed recordings of his career. Handy Man was a cover version of a song originally recorded in the late 1950s by a group called The Sparks of Rhythm…Written by Otis Blackwell and Jimmy Jones, it was recorded by several other artists including Jones whose version was a million seller and a #2 hit in 1960 – Del Shannon also recorded Handy Man in 1964…While James Taylor’s take on it was climbing the chart his JT album also released in June was becoming a major seller – It eventually moved close to four million copies and earned a nomination for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards…Competition was stiff with Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and The Eagles’ Hotel California in the same category…Rumours ultimately took home the prize, but Handy Man did win the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance of the Year…The song peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1977 while reaching #1 on the Canadian chart…Handy Man was the fourth and last top ten single for “Sweet Baby James” – The other three were You’ve Got a Friend, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and Fire and Rain.
