Hill TMC leader accused of assaulting GJM cadres PRADEEP LOHAGUN, KALIMPONG, 17 May 2014: Hill Trinamool Congress leader Mahendra Gazmer and other party members have been accused of launching an attack on Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters Friday evening when the latter were returning from Darjeeling in a celebratory mood following the poll results. An FIR was lodged with the Kalimpong police station claiming Gazmer had attacked the GJM supporters with a sharp weapon, and the police have arrested the TMC leader based on the complaint. Sources said the GJM supporters were confronted by Gazmer and his associates at the Chalisey area and the surprise attack injured Gautam Rai and Mohan Chhetri, both Morcha supporters. Several GJM supporters of Chalisey gheraoed the police station this morning and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. Gazmer has been slapped with charges under sections 341, 323, 326, 506 and 34 of the IPC. But he denied all the charges against him while interacting with reporters before entering the court. He said, “Some leaders and supporters of the GJM are trying to project me like a south Indian film star, someone who can singlehandedly take on 10 opponents and give them a good thrashing! The charges against me are utterly baseless.” Gazmer was subsequently released on bail as the charges against him come under the bailable section.
