Hillbilly or Redneck??? I assume most people dont know the difference. I guess Ill start with the most obvious of what set them apart. Hillbillies are from or have roots from the mountainous regions of the United States but usually associated with the Appalachians. Rednecks can be or have roots from anywhere. Hillbillies live a simple, uncomplicated style of life but that doesnt mean theyre simple or uncomplicated people. Hillbillies are innovative, imaginative, hard working people. They arent all Christians but they use christian values and teachings as a compass in there lives. They are a jack-of-all trades and master in some as well. They are fiercely independent but humble. They have a clan mentality of protecting and taking care of their own. They generally arent hypocritical and wouldnt suggest anyone do something they arent willing to do themselves. They are pragmatic and sensible. Rednecks arent the antithesis of a hillbilly and could be likened to them. What sets them apart though is Rednecks do live a complicated lifestyle. The tend to create their own problems. A generalization would be how most are willing to have a very expensive motorcycle/truck and live in a trailer. When I say a truck I dont mean a new truck or a nice used truck. I mean a truck that is relatively new and has all the tell-tale signs and upgrades. Some have so much invested in their trucks/motorcycles that it exceeds what they have invested in their homes. Rednecks can be loud and sometimes obnoxious. They typically only care about themselves. Most claim to be Christians but most of the claimants are hypocrites. Rednecks usually are jack-of-all trades too but arent necessarily masters of any though they may claim to be. They arent as innovative or imaginative as hillbillies. Rednecks would certainly suggest that you try something they have never done but they might if you hold their beer which should serve as a testament of their sensibility. How do I know??? Im a somewhat a recovering redneck derived from good hillbilly stock, (Mom from West Virginia and Dad from Connellsville Pa. I am proud of my heritage as all hillbillies should be regardless of the inaccurate stigmata that categorized them, (New York elitists). Notice I didnt say yankee. Yankee is southern thing associated with the civil war. Most mountain people could be considered neutral as most didnt own slaves and were usually to busy scratching out a living to care about politics. Best part of being a hillbilly is that it doesnt matter what color you are. If you have roots in the community then you have a potential to become a hillbilly. Hopefully someday Ill get back to my roots and can contribute to my community as I think we were all born to do.
