Hilltop Community Cries For Help By Melvin Tejan Mansaray Residents of Hilltop Community located at the back of International School, off Hill Cot/Jomo Kenyatta Road, New England Ville in Constituency 110, Ward 387, have publicly registered their concerns over the need for a passageway (steps) to access the Hill Top Community; protected water well facility and a feeder bridge to link New England and the Hilltop Community. A young lady fetching water at one of the natural wells in New England According to a cross-section of the youthful population of Hilltop Community, there is no substantial development project in this community. They added that the area is neglected and poor with no basic community service of any sort. Hilltop Community residents have been making strides to alleviate their constraints through self-help community-driven projects, one of which is the construction of steps to gain access to the hilly areas. However, this project has been stalled due to lack of adequate resources, despite the strong commitment of community labor and will. Also, this press witnessed how the community is exposed to contaminated water due to the lack of ideal stream water close to the residence of the former APC Hon. Marie Yansaneh. A good number of residents mainly children and young women were seen fetching for their respective homes the polluted water which apart of its impurities is unreserved for the population for especially Dry Season when people have to stay up all night to wait for dripping water. The population of Hilltop says they are finding it very difficult to have access to the main New England due to the stream that cut off the two vicinities and have therefore called on authorities and philanthropists to come to their aide by constructing a footbridge that will link both sides of the community. But there is controversy over this particular request for a footbridge as according to Hon. Chernor R. M Bah in a campaign speech in 2012, he provided funds for this project that was never implemented, which some members of the community believe was mismanaged by operatives close to the politician. However, Madam Betty who sells cookery around the Mojabi Stream, the location that was first identified for the construction of the said ‘white elephant’ bridge reported seeing daily women and children going to school or doing business as usual falling down due to the ruggedness of the path. The Hilltop Development Organization, is the leading and most active youth movement in the community, one of its leaders, Abu Dizzo, registered his confidence that if only they can have a one-on-one meeting with Hon. CRM Bah aka Cherikoko, a respite will be found to their needs. He dismissed claims of mismanagement of resources provided by Hon. Cherikoko and stated that iron rods and some building materials are still available and are in safe-keeping, adding that one Mr. Marcathy is the security personnel who has lived in the community for decades and in whose custody is the said building materials.
