Hine also kept in regular contact with DeGoey’s father, Roger, who the Pies’ list boss knew from their days working together at the Melbourne Fire Brigade. “I actually watched him (De Goey) early in the year last year so I should have told him to sit in the cupboard because I really liked him from the first game and I just thought, ‘Wow’,” Hine said. “Jordan is different type of player in that he is a 360-degree player, he doesn’t sort of work through the traffic. “He will sit and wait and when an option closes down on him he can use his hands really, really well.” DeGoey said he was thrilled to land at the Pies. “It’s an honour and a dream, mum barracks for them so it was her little goal to get me there,” De Goey said. “I hate to lose. When I bring that into my game it comes out in my contested ball. “It probably wasn’t one of my strengths as a junior but I’ve made it one this year.”
