Hip Hop 101 - The Lyric Lets Talk About It... Im just throwing this out here to see if people think its worthwhile. What do you guys think about us examining and dissecting Hip Hop lyrics as a discussion topic? A lot of this stuff is powerful. A lot is totally misunderstood. Even as a self-proclaimed Hip Hop Head (mainly ole skool), To this day, I still find myself learning more and more as I discuss the Culture and the lyrics of some of the best. Hip Hop, as a genre, seems to be deeper than other music. The lyrics have cultural and societal significance. Heres Nas first verse on a single released for major consumption. He was featured on Main Sources, Live At the Barbeque. Warning!!! Parental Discretion is Advised... Streets disciple, my raps are trifle I shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle Stampede the stage, I leave the microphone split Play Mr. Tuffy while Im on some Pretty Tone sh*t Verbal assassin, my architect pleases When I was twelve, I went to hell for snuffin Jesus Nasty Nas is a rebel to America Police murderer, Im causin hysteria My troops roll up with a strange force I was trapped in a cage and let out by the Main Source Swimmin in women like a lifeguard Put on a bulletproof ni**a I strike hard Kidnap the Presidents wife without a plan And, hangin niggaz just like the Ku Klux Klan I melt mics till the sound waves over Before steppin to me, youd rather step to Jehovah Slammin MCs on cement Cause verbally, Im iller than a AIDS patient I move swift, and uplift your mind shoot the gift when I riff in rhyme Rappin sniper, speakin real words My thoughts react, like Steven Spielbergs Poetry attacks, paragraphs punch hard My brain is insane, Im out to lunch God Science is dropped, my raps are toxic My voice-box locks and excels like a rocket What did he mean? Why was he so graphic? Did he use the Lords name in vain? Why did he referenced the Klan? Did he say kidnap the Presidents wife? Why is he a rebel to America? Do young Black men feel the way Nas did? What are your questions? Etc...?
