His Excellency Dr. Neil Parsan participates in Caribbean American Heritage Month Activities in Charleston, South Carolina His Excellency Dr. Neil Parsan, Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United States of America participated in the eighth installment of Charleston Carifest, in Charleston, South Carolina. The annual event celebrates the culture and heritage of the Caribbean American community in South Carolina. The celebrations began with a Caribbean Symposium hosted at the Avery Research Centre of the University of South Carolina. Ambassador Parsan participated as a panelist at the Symposium, along with Dr. Anil Ramnanan, Consul General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Miami, Florida and Dr. Allison McLetchie, Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina. Discussions focused on the theme of the Symposium: “Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago: Past, Present and Future.” Panelists also addressed, more specifically, the history of steelpan and soca and the many ways in which Trinidad and Tobago has used culture as tool for unity in a diverse, multi-cultural society. The Avery Research Centre was established to preserve, collect and make public the unique historical and cultural heritage of African Americans and the wider African Diaspora (including the Caribbean). Ambassador Parsan also participated in the gala dinner, where he served as a featured speaker. In addressing attendees, His Excellency highlighted the heightened international profile of Trinidad and Tobago due to the recent visits by international leaders including, US Vice President Joe Biden and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping. Both leaders visited Trinidad and Tobago in June 2013 to engage in discussions with the government on issues related to energy, security and human and social development. Ambassador Parsan’s visit to South Carolina culminated with a Business Forum highlighting business and investment opportunities in our twin island republic. Attendees included executives from a variety of sectors including finance, energy, real estate, tourism and urban planning. His Excellency’s presentation was well received and follow-up plans are currently being made for a Trade Mission to Trinidad and Tobago. Charleston is the oldest and second largest city of South Carolina. The city is well-known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture and diverse restaurant community.
