His message, to me, is very important. I am so thankful and blessed that my Dad taught me how to read and write in Hmong and can still use those skills today. Even though I cannot speak Hmong as fluent as Id like, Im still very glad that I know my own native language. Just because we live in the U.S. it does not mean that we forget our own cultural values, who we are, what we are, and where we came from. Growing up in the United States, I struggled with what my identity was. I didnt know what it meant to be Hmong or why I was even Hmong. In grade school, sometimes, I would even be embarrassed to speak my own language. This is why being educated on identity, race, culture, and ethnicity is so important. You need to identify yourself and be able to build your own story so that you can tell your children and other people who you are. Being able to pursue in a higher education has helped me identify who I am and really helped me embrace being Hmong. Though some of you may not agree with his message, I truly believe that it is powerful and that everyone, no matter what race you are, should know your cultural values, norms, and traditions. Preserve your culture and keep it alive as long as possible.
