Historian Webstar Tarpley states: “The oligarchical system of Great Britain is not an autochthonous product of English or British history. It represents rather the tradition of the Babylonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians which has been transplanted into the British Isles through a series of upheavals.” This statement is perhaps controversial but Britain’s pre-industrial rise to imperial greatness was certainly during an age of oligarchy, for which Tarpley states: “The world centre of gravity for the forces of oligarchism was the oligarchy of Venice...the Venetian oligarchy decided for various reasons to transfer its families, fortunes, and characteristic outlook to a new base of operations, which turned out to be the British Isles.”
