(Historic tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on September 17) --- On this date on September 17, 1989, the last Cuban soldiers departed from Ethiopia, ending a 12 year presence in the horn of.Africa. Cuban president Fidel Castro sent some 15,000 Cuban soldiers into Ethiopia in 1977 to combat against the Somalian invasion in what became the Ogaden War. Cuba maintained a continued presence in Ethiopia providing training and technical support. Hundreds of orphaned Ethiopian children would also be relocated to Cuba for study,.where many remain. In Addis Ababa, there is Ethio-Cuba Friendship Park, dedicated in memory of the 163 Cuban soldiers that died in that Ogaden war. (On July 8th, 2008, Cuban vice-president Esteban Lazo Hernandez visited Ethio-Cuba Friendship Park in Addis Ababa, commemorating the 163 Cuban soldiers killed defending Ethiopia in the 1977 Ogaden War.
