Historically, what is so important about today, October 1? I checked online. It listed at least 307 significant worldwide events that happened between now and as far back as 331 BC. To cite a few: Alexander the Great defeats Darius III of Persia in the Battle of Gaugamela; Yosemite National Park Forms; or First Appearance of In God We Trust in US Paper Currency. I doubt I will remember many important events that took place on October 1. Except for one: October 1, 1981, I will never forget. Thats the day my Ama (my father) slipped to his eternal residence in heaven. When I learned of his passing, I rushed to the province to comfort my mother. I did not meet a hysterically grieving widow, like many that I often saw during those times. My mother was calm and peaceful. “Napakabait,” was all she said about my father. I looked at my mother’s light brown eyes. They had always been sad, but now with my father’s passing, they were mourning. I watched tears slowly roll down her cheeks. Embracing her, I whispered, “Let’s thank God for that!” My mother had only one word for father: “NAPAKABAIT” ( the superlative form of being good-natured). I wonder what word people will have for me when I leave Earth. How about you?
