History Connections—World War I and Baseball: Known in Lockport, New York as a stand-out pitcher/catcher duo, Cpl. Bernard Leo Dolan and Sgt. Matthew S. Lanighan played baseball together, served in World War I together, and gave the ultimate sacrifice together. Arriving in France with the 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, Dolan and Lanighan were both killed on October 16, 1918, and are buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. Dolan and Lanighan played for a variety of minor league and semi-professional baseball teams before entering the war, and prior to deployment they played in the regimental league at Camp Dix in New Jersey.
