History & Haunting of: Ogunquit,York County, Maine ,U.S Most people are aware of Ogunquits rich history as an arts and fishing community. But, as Halloween approaches, there are at least a couple of tales of haunts around town. By Jim Kanak In each case, fortunately, the ghosts are friendly. One is an inn and the other is a private home. Dean Goodman is the current owner of the Old Village Inn establishment is one of the oldest buildings in town, having been built in 1833 right in the village square. He said he learned several years ago that everything there was not normal. Ten years ago, the bartender here said he would turn off all the lights when he closed up at night, Goodman said. Then he would look back and the lights would be on in Room 2. Thats not all, however. There was another time when an elderly man staying in Room 6 here with his wife said they were getting frisky with the lights out, Goodman said. Then, he said a spirit turned on the lights. Goodman said he believed there were also spirits in the cellar. The staff doesnt like to go down there, he said, noting also that a former worker had said that her dogs reacted badly whenever they were in the basement, as well. Ive had these weird feelings at times here, but Ive never seen anything, Goodman said. Theres definitely something here, but its good energy, not malicious. But I dont know if [interrupting] an elderly couple getting frisky might not be considered malicious. The other haunting tale is from a local person who grew up in a house in Ogunquit in the late 1960s. He said his family learned quickly they shared the house with a former resident there. When we first moved in, my parents moved into a room with an alcove as their bedroom, the former resident said. The next morning, my moms robe was gone. We found it in another room at the end of a hall. The next night her robe and shoes were taken. They were found in the same room. That became the master bedroom then. Again, theres more. One night my sister had to go to the bathroom, the former resident said. As she walked down the hall, someone took her by the hand. But when she told us about it in the morning, none of us had done it. So, it was a friendly ghost at least. Editors note: the names of the people in the private home story and its location are not revealed to protect the privacy of the current owner. seacoastonline/ The Ogunquit Playhouse It is said Revolutionary War soldiers are seen here at times marching the playhouse fields when fog rolls off the ocean.. theshadowlands.net The Ogunquit Playhouse is a regional theater in Ogunquit, Maine. The Ogunquit Playhouse is one of the last remaining summer theatres from the Straw Hat Circuit, also referred to as Summer Stock, still producing live musical theatre. The theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places Ogunquit, which means beautiful place by the sea in the indigenous Abenaki language, was first a village within Wells, which was settled in 1641. The first sawmill here was established in 1686, and shipbuilding developed along the tidal Ogunquit River. Local shipwrights built schooners, brigs and dories. At what was then called Fish Cove, near the unnavigable Josias River, fishing was a major livelihood. But the cove was unprotected by a headland or breakwater from Atlantic storms, so fishermen had to protect their boats by hauling them ashore each night. Resolving to create a safe anchorage, they formed the Fish Cove Harbor Association, and dug a channel across land they purchased to connect Fish Cove with the Josias River. When the trench was complete, erosion helped to further widen the passage. The resulting tidewater basin is called Perkins Cove, spanned by a manually operated draw footbridge. With a 3½-mile beach of pale sand and dunes forming a barrier peninsula, connected to the mainland in 1888 by bridge across the Ogunquit River, the village was discovered by artists. It became a popular art colony and tourist area. Particularly after 1898, when the Ogunquit Art Colony was established, it was not unusual to see both artists and fishermen working around Perkins Cove. To accommodate summer crowds, several seaside hotels and inns were built. en.wikipedia.org/ Photo 1The Old Village Inn Photo 2 The Ogunquit Playhouse
