History is the retelling of events often from the perspective of people who weren’t even there at the time. Often we read a white-washed version of the truth written to serve a specific purpose. In our southern states we are still offered a sanitized version of slavery meant to make it appear less atrocious than it actually was. Truth be told; much of the history we have been taught is slanted to make us look better than we actually were. We all remember back in grade school being taught that Columbus ‘discovered’ America and we donned the construction-paper pilgrim caps for school programs as we celebrated Thanksgiving. Most of us never realized the truth that America was inhabited by millions of Indians and we systematically eliminated them or pushed them onto barren reservations so we could possess the land. We were taught it was our manifest destiny and therefore the murder and destruction were justifiable. We all grew up watching Cowboys and Indians and it was plain to see that the Cowboys were the good guys and the Indians were the bad guys who would scalp their victims given half a chance. Funny thing about history, it can be doctored up to become little more than a one-sided myth. Perhaps it would be wise of us to consider that our nation is not the only nation that teaches a sanitized version of history meant to paint its people in the best possible light? If you have time the following video is a perfect example of what history can leave out when taught from a biased perspective. It is a fascinating account of the Jewish – Palestinian conflict told from the perspective of an Israeli man who actually lived it. https://youtube/watch?v=etXAm-OylQQ&index=28&list=PL523566F6C2470BF2
