History is the story we tell ourselves, and is as vulnerable to - TopicsExpress

History is the story we tell ourselves, and is as vulnerable to self-serving re-alignment as anything else in our collective narratives. But D-Day was a very specific thing, a different category of historical event. Thousands died who knew that was a likely outcome. Millions mobilised with no certainty of success. Whole economies were turned around and old divisions set aside in the name of common purpose. I wonder whether future historians will look back at the sad, ineffectual fumbles of our generation (when faced with the even greater threat of impending ecological catastrophe) and be able to say that we, too, stood our ground and did what needed to be done?
