History of the Lupine, Part 1: Millions of years ago, when our race was little more than scattered packs of scavengers, we lived in a world ruled by dragons. They were cruel, ruled with absolute authority, and viewed all other races as inferior. We chafed greatly under their rule, but unlike the other races we rebelled against the dragons. For thousands of years we fought. Over and over we were brought to the edge of extinction and then allowed to rebuild, for our struggle amused the dragons much like a cat plays with a mouse. However, unlike the mouse, we learned from our losses and did not fear the cat. Then our mages mastered Gate magic and everything changed. We no longer needed to move overland and could mount offensives anywhere in our world. The tide had turned and the dragons knew it. So long as we could keep the secrets of the Gates, victory was all but assured. That is when the Great Packs began to plot against each other, all vying to be the most powerful once the Dragons were vanquished. No one is sure which of the Packs caused it (or even if any single pack was to blame), but as a result of this infighting the Dragons managed to steal the secrets of the Gates without our knowing. Having tapped into our Gate network the Dragons began tracking our movements and biding their time, waiting for the most opportune moment to reveal their knowledge and crush us once and for all. This chance came all too soon as we discovered the seat of their power and breeding grounds. An isle surrounded by unparalleled defenses. Hitting the Dragons here would be the largest attack yet, but victory would assure their destruction. And so we amassed all the packs for a single, massive assault on an “unsuspecting” target. But the Dragons were prepared, and we were slaughtered. Those few who survived the attack retreated the best they could, but the Dragons knew our every gate location and were waiting. Of the hundreds of thousands who attacked only a very few survived. Among these survivors was the greatest of the Gate Mages, Dracaro. He gathered together what was left of the Lupine people, counting on the Dragons’ arrogance and sadistic pleasure in watching their prey run to delay their final strike. Once all were gathered Dracaro opened one last Gate, but this Gate did not lead to any place on our homeworld.
