Hiya! Were lurching into a Friday...with a definite cool-down underway and showers ready to leap on us like a cat on a bad dog. Today is May 16, and on the celeb birthday list--to prove that they have them just like us--today we find Janet Jackson (thanks for the convenient 7-second delay we have on the radio, Janet!), Pierce Brosnan, and NPR alum Bob Edwards...tomorrow its Bob Saget and Enya...and Sunday its Reggie Jackson and Tina Fey. Mr. October and Ms. Saturday Night. Sundays the 34th anniversary of the weirdest thing Ive ever seen in my life, the jaw-dropping eruption of Mt. St. Helens. That was on a Sunday, too--this years calendar is exactly the same as 1980s.(CORRECTION--its not! 1980 was a leap year and 2014 isnt!--thanks Diane Purvis McGinnis) If youre up early on Sunday, I hope youll tune in K103 at 7 for an interview that Ill be doing with the lead geologist at the Cascades Volcano Observatory. We have a blasé attitude toward the slumbering volcanoes that loom over us, and we need to take their temperature occasionally. With a hell of a thermometer. The big news story today carries a San Diego dateline. Nine, maybe 10 wildfires burning...tornadoes of flames...one fatality, many evacuees, and a whole lot of scared people. This is happening amid the driest three years in history there. Locally: somebody stole a veterans backpack from his car in West Linn. The backpack contained his Bronze Star, a letter from the president, and more. Thats probably not what the thief was looking for (you cant trade it for meth), so he/she probably pitched it all over a fence. Beyonce, Jay Z, and Bs sister Solange say theyve all kissed and made up after the elevator incident, where Solange put a beating on Jay. They dont explain it, but say nobody was drunk or high, and that its a private matter and all families have problems so please stop playing that security video over and over again. Okay. So anyway, thats whats on our early menu. Pretty slow day except for San Diego. Good thoughts to our friends there, and lets stay peaceful here. Comments and updates welcome!
