HoI Update The combination of Kriegsmarine merchant raiders in the Gulf of Aden and the Regia Marina in the Mediterranean has effectively closed the Suez Canal to merchant shipping. British merchantmen travelling to and from British possessions in Asia must now round the Cape of Good Hope, and through the wolf packs guarding the passes through to Britain. Further south, the battleships SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU patrol off of Gibraltar, while the pocket battleships TEGETHOFF, PRINZ EUGEN, and FREDERICK DER GROSS patrol off of west Africa. The naval blockade claims dozens of merchantmen and escort vessels every week. Plans for the intense bombing of Britain have been cancelled, as air assets are moved east to prepare for Operation Barbarossa, enticing severe protests from the officers of Luftflotte II, who were meant to prepare for the campaign. Instead, fighter forces in both France, the Low Countries, and western Germany have been strengthened, as the RAF begins night time bombing attacks on the Ruhr. The Luftwaffe reports that these bombers are being savaged, but fighter units along the Channel coast are being heavily attrited by massive British air sweeps launched from southern England.
