Hold Lightly Your Blessings “Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.” ~ Ecclesiastes 11:1 Reading this verse this morning and really pondering its meaning, it brought to my memory the story of Jason and David Benham. Jason and David became household names with their do-it-yourself program that had aired on Home and Garden TV (HGTV). Last spring their show was cancelled when the network found out they were devout Christians and found out their views on certain issues clashed with what the network held to. Their show was promptly cancelled. In an interview shortly after the cancellation, David was asked how he felt about their firing. David gave an extraordinary answer, when you hold everything God has given you with an open hand, then He never has to pry your fingers loose, when its going to be removed. So we are holding it with an open hand. Our reputation is not ours. Whatever we have is from God. God has blessed us with many blessings of joys in this life and sometimes we grasp them a little to tightly. We take for granted that there always going to be there. Instead of walking like Jason and David did with an open hand and realizing its all Gods. The Gospel story of the rich young ruler coming to Jesus and asking Him what must He do to inherit eternal life. Jesus knowing what he was gripping tightly in his hand, said, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions (Matthew 19:16-22). I believe we can be like the rich young ruler with tight grip on our joys and walk away sorrowfully. Walk with an open hand my friends. Great Giver of all gifts, thank You for the blessings of this life. Help me to hold loosely, very lightly the gifts that You bestow. Help me to hold fast to You.
