Holy Roman Empire – Revived On November 3, 2009, 3pm Central European Time, we witnessed one of the most profound prophetic fulfillments in all human history. Yet the vast majority of the world carried on with business as usual with no understanding as to what actually took place. What took place in the eyes of the world was the signing of the Lisbon Treaty (European Union Constitution). What took place for those who understood the Bible prophecies was the revival of the Holy Roman Empire. When a treaty is signed it becomes international law and on November 3, 2009, the Holy Roman Empire was reborn. What is so amazing about this rebirth of the Holy Roman Empire is the fact that it was prophesied in the Bible over 2500 years ago and that this empire will be the last empire that would rise and rule over “all the earth.” The prophecy in the Bible which foretold this event is found in Daniel in the form of a dream given to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. Upon awakening one morning, he remembered that he had dreamed a very unusual dream. However, he could not remember what he had dreamed. The event disturbed him so much that he called for his magicians, wise men and astrologers. He demanded that they reveal to him what he had dreamed and explain what his dream meant. Of course they were unable to do so and asked him to first tell them his dream and they would then be able to give the meaning of the dream to the king. Nebuchadnezzar realized their supposed wisdom and powers were false and commanded that all of the wise men under his realm be put to death. When the executioners arrived at the house of Daniel and announced that he was to be executed, he of course wanted to know why. When Daniel heard the story of the king’s dream he desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation. Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to his companions and they sought God concerning this secret. The secret was revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Daniel then appeared before the king, recounted the dream, and gave the interpretation. The actual dream is recorded in Daniel 2:31-35. Daniel 2 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This images head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.. ~ Daniel 2:31-35 As Daniel described the dream to Nebuchadnezzar, the king no doubt began to recall the details of his dream. He was astonished that God had revealed this secret to Daniel and realized that Daniel was a true prophet of God. The dream depicted a great image whose head was of gold; breast and arms of silver; belly and thighs of brass; legs of iron; feet of part iron and part clay. Then a stone, which was cut out without hands, smote the image upon the feet and broke them to pieces. As Nebuchadnezzar watched, the stone which smote the image grew until it became a great mountain and filled the earth. Daniel then went on to reveal the meaning of the dream to the king Nebuchadnezzar. We find the meaning of the dream recorded in Daniel 2:36-45. Daniel 2 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. ~ Daniel 2:36-45 The interpretation: Five World Empires In Daniel 2:36-45, the meaning of the dream was revealed. Through Daniel, God told Nebuchadnezzar that each section of the image stood for a world dominating empire that would be succeeded by another, and that the head of gold represented him and his kingdom, Babylon. Daniel said to the king, Thou art this head of gold (Daniel 2:38). Then he explained that, after Nebuchadnezzars kingdom, another would rise which would be inferior to his kingdom. After that kingdom, yet a third kingdom would arise. This third kingdom was represented by the belly and thighs of brass. To fully understand the importance of this prophecy of Nebuchadnezzars image, carefully notice the key phrase in verse 39, which shall bear rule over all the earth. We know that many nations have existed from the time of Daniel until now. However, only five empires have existed since Daniels time that has ruled the entire world. They are the empires depicted in this image of Nebuchadnezzars dream. Gold – Babylon Nebuchadnezzars Babylon ruled the known world of its day and was the head of gold. In the days of Belshazzar, the last king of Babylon, the hand of God wrote on his palace wall foretelling that his kingdom would fall that night and that his kingdom would be replaced by the kingdom of the Medes and the Persians (Daniel 2:40). Both history and the Bible (Daniel 5:30-31) tell us that this did occur. Silver – Media Persia The empire of the Medes and the Persians is the kingdom symbolized by the arms and breasts of silver. This empire dominated the world for over 200 years, from the night that Babylon fell in 539 BC until it was defeated by the Grecians under Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Brass -- Greece The Grecian Empire is the third world empire of King Nebuchadnezzars image. The Grecian Empire is symbolized by the belly and thighs of brass. Alexander the Great conquered the entire world by the time he reached his early thirties. Greece was the dominant force in the world for 134 years until defeated by the Romans in 197 BC. Iron – Rome Then began the rule of the Roman Empire which was symbolized by the legs of iron (Daniel 2:40). The Roman Empire still ruled the world at the time of Jesus Christ. Thats the reason there were Roman soldiers at the crucifixion of Jesus. During the life of Christ, the entire world was under tribute to the Roman Empire. This empire continued for 500 years until it decayed from within and was overrun by barbarians. Iron and Clay – The Fifth Empire The prophecy states that one more empire would rise which would rule over all the earth. Until this last empire, each section of the image in the kings dream had a completely different metal from the previous section. From the head of gold, to the arms and breasts of silver, to the belly and thighs of brass, and to the legs of iron, each is a total change of metals. The feet, however, consist of two elements - iron and clay. The mixture indicates that the element of iron (the Roman Empire) from the legs would survive; however, another element would be mixed in. After the Roman Empire there did in fact come another empire, which was related, but different. This latest empire was called the Holy Roman Empire, founded 500 years later in 800 AD. It was a partnership between Charlemagne and Pope Leo III, a political leader and a spiritual leader. The political and Roman element (Iron) did survive, but another factor (symbolized by Clay) was mixed with it. The Holy Roman Empire It is important that we understand the difference between the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. They are not the same. The Roman Empire ruled the world from about 200 BC to approximately 300 AD. The Holy Roman Empire wasnt even born until 800 AD. On Christmas Day, 800 AD in Rome, Pope Leo III of the Roman Catholic Church crowned Charlemagne, saying, I crown you Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, became the pope’s official protector. With the anointing of the Roman Catholic Church, Charlemagne instantly carried the most powerful endorsement of the day. The reason for its formation was that the pope desired to extend his influence over the entire world but did not have enough influence or power to fulfill his dream. The emperor also desired to extend his power over the entire earth, but did not have the power and influence to accomplish his goals either. Thus the pope and the emperor agreed together to share their influence in order to establish the world dominating empire which they both sought. As a result, the kingdom became known as the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire has always been ruled by two men, a political leader and a spiritual leader. The last world government will be ruled by two men – the Antichrist and the False Prophet (Revelation 19:19-20). The feet of iron and clay Note that the iron element of the former Roman Empire remained and the new clay element, the Roman Catholic Church, had been added. Remember that the image in the king’s dream had feet of iron mixed with clay. It is easy to see that the clay represents the Roman Catholic Church. During the reign of the Holy Roman Empire there were times the pope was so powerful that he appointed the rulers of Europe. Upon their coronation, many European kings would make the obligatory trip to Rome on order to bow at the feet of the pope, kiss his foot, and receive his blessing. Notice Daniel 2:43 says, And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men. This refers to religious forces forming alliances with political forces, which is what happened under the guise of the Holy Roman Empire. If history holds true, the pope will probably have a very strong influence on who will lead this final Holy Roman Empire. It is likely this leaders religious preference will be Roman Catholic. Throughout history the Holy Roman Empire has always been a union of church and state. The verse continues by stating that “...they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.” This passage has been explicitly fulfilled. History tells us that the political element and religious element of the Holy Roman Empire experienced problems through the years and because of the quarreling, their alliance would eventually disintegrate. You can check the history of the Holy Roman Empire from the rule of Charlemagne till present and you will find from the time of Charlemagne until now; the Holy Roman Empire has risen and fallen several times. It has usually centered around a coalition including Germany and Italy, much like Charlemagne’s rule over the Franks. It has certainly been as the scriptures said: the iron would not cleave to the clay! However; the endtime revival of the Holy Roman Empire led by the Antichrist and the False Prophet will ultimately achieve worldwide domination. The Great Stone The most important element of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is the “stone.” The stone, which was cut out of the mountain, rolled down and smote the image upon the feet. The stone represents the kingdom of God (Daniel 2:44). After it had destroyed the entire image, the stone grew until it filled the earth. This was a portrayal of the fact that, in the days of the ten kings (represented by the ten toes of Nebuchadnezzar’s image), the God of Heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed. We need to understand about the “ten toes” in the king’s dream (Daniel 2:42-44). Although the scripture does not specifically mention the number “ten”, we know that two feet have ten toes. Other passages of Bible prophecy foretell that a union of ten kings will be the last power to rule the earth. It is during this final reign that Jesus Christ will come back to earth to establish His kingdom (the stone hewn from the mountain which grew until it filled the whole earth). Later, in Daniel chapter 7 starting at verse 24, we are told... Daniel 7 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. ~ Daniel 7:24-27 We discovered this in our previous post (United States in the Bible). European Union / Holy Roman Empire As a devout Roman Catholic, Charlemagne would always be at the beck and call of the Pope. Charlemagne set about to consolidate Europe as never before. He would come to be known as the Father of Europe. The countries that make up the European Union occupy the area that was formerly the Holy Roman Empire. The Roman Catholic Church has played a very significant role in bringing about the European Union. She has had representatives’ at all high level European Union meetings. We also know that many of the countries that make up the European Union are predominantly Roman Catholic. Those countries that are not predominantly Roman Catholic have a mixture of Catholicism and Lutheranism. The modern ecumenical movement has been merging these two bodies together, returning them to the status they once had before the reformation. If some of the European Union countries make up the final ten-nation union, which is very strong possibility, we can see the Holy-Roman relationship is already firmly established. Another interesting fact is the Western European Union Assembly (WEU) had 10 full member countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom) whose initial roll was for the defense and security of the European Union. The WEU became the primary defense institution of the European Union in the 1990s. According to ordinary sessions adopted texts Recommendation 666, the Western European Union would be the military muscle of the EU. Recommendation 666 also established a High Representative position able to call a council at any time, as well as hold emergency powers if granted. In a nutshell, Recommendation 666 is a reply from the WEU (Western European Union) to the Council of the European Union. The WEU told the European Union, via. Recommendation 666, that they would be the military muscle for the EU, and in the event of an emergency, the power of the 10 nation WEU would be directed by the Secretary General of the European Union, also known as the High Representative for the Common and Foreign Security Policy. The office of High Representative was created by this separate EU legal document #666 and was adopted June 5, 2000. (Note: Coincidental as it seems, I “AM NOT” implying that Recommendation 666 is the mark of the beast.) Since the signing of the Lisbon Treaty the original 10 full member countries are still a part of the European Defense Agency with other additional countries now added to it. (britannica / assembly-weu.org / eda.europa.eu) What is interesting is the Armed Forces of Malta and Germany make up a part of this defense agency. Why is this interesting you may ask... To much information to list here. Malta, called the most frequently bombed spot on earth during WWII, has history that goes back to the “Knights of Malta”. The Knights of Malta or The Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (to give their full name) were formed long before their reign on Malta. The Order was originally established in 1085 as a community of monks responsible for looking after the sick at the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem. They later became a military order, defending crusader territory in the Holy Lands and safeguarding the perilous routes taken by medieval pilgrims. The Knights were drawn exclusively from noble families and the Order acquired vast wealth from those it recruited. The Order was ruled by a Grand Master who was answerable only to the Pope. Knights were chosen from the aristocratic families of France, Italy, Spain, England and Portugal. On acceptance into the Order they were sworn to celibacy, poverty and obedience. From its early date the Order of Malta was both a religious order and a military brotherhood. Today, its Grand Master is accorded the singular style His Most Eminent Highness and accorded precedence in the Roman Catholic hierarchy. There are still professed knights of the Order, from among whose number Grand Masters are elected, who take religious vows namely celibacy, obedience and poverty. The Knights of Malta have ties with the Jesuit Order and Vatican of Rome (Google news “Malta History” / The Catholic Encyclopedia). If you remember from our previous post (United States in the Bible) the beast of the leopard (Germany) had 4 heads and the wings of a fowl. We showed that the four heads represented the rise and fall of that nation (Daniel 7:6 ; Revelation 17:10). The four heads represent the Four Reichs, or kingdoms. The First Reich. 800 to 1806 - This was the Holy Roman Empire of Germany beginning with Charlemagne (Charles the Great). As history has shown most of its emperors were actually crowned by a pope. Charlemagne was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Day 800. The Second Reich. 1870 to 1919 - Began under the diplomatic statesmanship of Otto Von Bismarck, “The Iron Chancellor.” From the unification of Germany following the Franco-Prussian War (1870 - 1871) to the German defeat in the First World War. Bismarck attempted to stop Catholic political control of Germany, but failed. The Third Reich. 1933-1945 Adolph Hitler’s Germany followed a brief interim called the Weimar Republic. Nazi Germany was defeated in WWII and divided into East and West Germany. Journalists of that era called it a “deadly wound”. The deadly wound was healed when Mikhail Gorbachev ordered the wall torn down in 1989. It is the deadly wound that was healed in the prophecy of Revelation 13:3 which we covered in a previous post (World Government Forming Now). The Fourth Reich. 1951 to present – Germany (leopard) and France (fowl) sponsored the European Coal and Steel Community, which evolved into the present day European Union which is now the newly reborn Holy Roman Empire. The Euro is now the common currency, and Germany is still the dominating nation in the European Union. The European Union is a Revived Holy Roman Empire The Economist Magazine known as the periodical of kings and presidents is published out of London and is controlled by a man by the name of lord Rothschild. Some people say it is the world’s most influential magazine. It has a special column devoted to reporting on the latest developments toward European unification. The name of this column is called “Charlemagne” The 2009 February 12th edition of Economist Magazine’s Charlemagne page was entitled, “English is Coming” and was devoted to the fact that English is sweeping through Europe and is pretty much taking over. This is important because this is prophesied in the Bible. A very prominent prophecy states that English will be the global language of the endtime. A few years ago the United Nations officially recognized English as the worlds global language. The prophecy in the Bible about England is found in Daniel 7 and was explained in Lesson One of our previous post (United States in the Bible). In this lesson, we proved that the lion represents England, the bear represents Russia, the eagle represents the United States, the leopard represents Germany, and the ten-horned beast symbolizes the a one world governmental system coming from a re-born Holy Roman Empire. In Revelation 13 these same symbols are used. But here they have merged into one beast (kingdom) instead of four separate nations. This is God’s way of illustrating the merging of the nations of the world into a global government; the endtime government of the Antichrist. The process is known as globalization. In Daniel 7, the four beasts each have one head, except for the leopard with four heads. The total number of heads of all the beasts is seven. In Revelation 13, the one unified beast still has a total of seven heads—a lion head, a bear head, four leopard heads and a ten-horned head. But the prophecy makes a point of saying that the “mouth” of the seven-headed world government beast is the mouth of the lion (England/Great Britain). Why? Throughout history, the number one blockage to the establishment of a world government has always been the language barrier. At the tower of Babel, God wanted to stop the people from having a world government, so he confused their language. The mouth of the beast being the lion reveals that the global language of the endtime will be the language of England—English. This was explained in our previous post (World Government Forming Now). Another indicator that the European Union is the Holy Roman Empire is the Charlemagne Prize. The Charlemagne Prize, a political award established 1949, is one of the most prestigious European prizes. It has been awarded once a year since 1950 by the German city of Aachen. The Charlemagne Prize is a citizens prize for “distinguished service on behalf of European unification.” By the will of its initiators, the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen is to be awarded for outstanding contributions to the cause of European cooperation and development. It is to honor the fostering of United Europe with regard to politics, economics, culture, and the mind and spirit. It commemorates Charlemagne, ruler of the Frankish Empire and founder of what became the Holy Roman Empire, who resided and is buried at Aachen. On May 9th 2002, for the first time, the Charlemagne Prize Association decided to honor not an individual or a group of persons, but an object. It paid tribute to the euro – European Union currency. The Charlemagne building is a high-rise in Brussels (Belgium), which houses the Directorate-General for Trade, the Directorate-General for External Relations and the Directorate General for Enlargement of the European Commission. The European Union flag is the symbol not only of the European Union but also of Europes unity and identity in a wider sense. The circle of gold stars represents solidarity and harmony between the peoples of Europe. The number of stars has nothing to do with the number of Member States. There are twelve stars because the number twelve is traditionally the symbol of perfection, completeness and unity. The flag therefore remains unchanged regardless of European Union enlargement. It was designed with the 12 stars of the Virgin Mary as depicted by the Roman Catholic Church. European Union flag designer Arsène Heitz has already acknowledged that the Book of Revelation helped to inspire him with his design. Revelation is the source for the twelve-star halo of the Roman Catholic Church for the Virgin Mary. Could this indicate the symbiotic relationship between the Vatican and the EU? Iron and Clay. Another prophecy which clearly predicts the same event is found in Revelation 17. Revelation 17 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. ~ Revelation 17:12-14 As previously said, the last human government to rule upon earth will be the union of ten kings. In some places in the Bible they are described as ten toes and in other places as ten horns. The important point is that the ten kings will rule prior to the establishment of the kingdom of God upon the earth. In our previous posts of lesson one (United States in The Bible) and lesson two (World Government Forming Now), this ten-nation kingdom was discussed in greater detail. With further study we can see that this ten king union will likely come out of the European Union. Summary As the world watched the birth of the European Union, they that understand among the people, witnessed one of the most profound prophetic fulfillments in all human history. The re-birth of the Holy Roman Empire. When we combine all that we have learned from our previous posts (United States in The Bible and World Government Forming Now), we can see this all coming together. How it will all play out with the European Union and the United Nations, time will only tell. What we do know is that the Bible prophecies there will be a world governmental system in place during the last days. We know World Government is here and being set up right now. We know that the re-born Holy Roman Empire is here right now. In the prophecy of Revelation 17 we find that the ten kings give their power to the beast (Antichrist). Notice that these ten kings make war with the Lamb (Jesus Christ), and that the Lamb defeats them. The central theme of the entire Bible is that God’s kingdom will some day be established upon the earth. The governments of men will be abolished, and Jesus Christ will return to earth to rule as King of kings and Lord of lords. In the prophecy of Daniel chapter 2 we find that the feet of the image represent the Holy Roman Empire! The stone, which smote the image representing human governments upon the feet of iron and clay, was the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Scripture prophesies that, when all human governments are destroyed, the kingdom of Jesus Christ will grow, filling the entire earth. This illustrates to us that the revived Holy Roman Empire will be in existence when Jesus returns to establish His kingdom. Revelation 11:15 describes this momentous event: “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” ~ Revelation 11:15 --- I say, Lord Jesus come quickly! What to expect in a future post: (I am still researching the Bible, studying, and writing this lesson.) “The Antichrist and the False Prophet” The last day world government of the Antichrist will most likely come from the revived Holy Roman Empire. We know this because the ten toes of Nebuchadnezzar’s image were of iron mingled with clay as just explained above. The Bible tells us that the Antichrist will rule the entire world and that he will come to power through peace and flatteries. The Bible also tells us that there is a False Prophet coming that will influence people to follow the Antichrist. In our next lesson we will examine the prophecies in the book of Daniel and Revelation concerning the Antichrist and the False Prophet and show where these two separate people will come from. Since the prophecies concerning the endtime are all coming to pass right now, it is certain that the Antichrist and the False Prophet are alive on earth at this present time. These two people are undoubtedly in power right now or very near the reigns of power. It is very likely that we have already heard the names of these two men, but we do not know for certain yet who they are. One thing is certain; “they that understand among the people” will not be deceived!
