Holy cities determining the beginning of Ramadan 1435 UPDATE: As for some local moonsighting followers who are overly critical about the Saudi government following calculations and the Umm alQuraa calendar for determining the beginning of months, as you may of heard, contrary to both calculations and the Umm alQuraa calendar, they are beginning Ramadan Sunday as they did not sight the moon. As for the calculation organizations who had arbitrarily decided on using Mecca to determine their criteria for the conjunction of the moon hoping to coincide with the holy cities, they also are not able to coincide with the holy cities as the high judiciary council did not follow calculations or the Umm alQuraa calendar. Based on my past visits to the holy cities, I was reassured by many there that the determination of beginning the religious months is not based on calculations nor the Umm alQuraa calendar, rather its the actual sighting.
