Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba announced yesterday that - from December 2015 - if parents fail to register a newborn within a month the child will not exist as a living South African citizen on the national population register. Gigaba disclosed this in the National Assembly while outlining his departments strategic priorities for the 2014-2015 financial year. Once the 30-day deadline comes into effect unregistered children will not be able to obtain vital documents such as birth certificates and identity documents, needed to access a range of public facilities and other services.
