More than 200,000 British visitors flow in to Nairobi and Mombasa each year, but this has declined recently to around 150,000 UK visitor arrivals, followed by the USA with around 120,000. But due to recent insecurities in parts of Kenya and the adverse travel advisory from the governments of these countries, tourists have been provoked to cancel their trips to this destination. The Hospitality industry is suffering with hotel rooms remaining unoccupied for months. This has resulted to a number of job cuts. The only tourists that do visit Kenya are the Chinese who are now held as invaluable tourists by most tourism boards, merely occupy a quarter of Kenya’s tourism. The natural beauty of Kenya is well loved and visited by the British for more than 10 years. The flights are also well connected from London to Nairobi on a daily basis. But the recent terrorist acts in Nairobi have prompted apprehensive responses from British tour operators and the governments warning which restricts all “non-essential” travel to Mombasa and surrounding areas has naturally stalled the inflow of British tourists to Kenya. Safari Holidays are losing their demand which were rides that British travellers loved. The industry professionals of Kenya feel that it is the large media coverage that has a lot to do with the spread of terror. They feel with all large Medias having an office in Kenya even the slightest terror act gets reported bringing adverse affect on Kenyan tourism industry. They also feel that some of the reports are inaccurate and spread to cause sensation sending wrong signals to international tourists. For instance the appalling events in Mpeketoni were described as being in Lamu and the burning down of an office at the nearby Amu Ranch was reported as being an incident that took place in a key tourist centre. People are going to Malaysia which is further away from UK and the USA than Kenya because they wish to avoid the risk factor. Unless people are made more aware of their misconception of the situation in Kenyan, tourism suffers in this region. Safaris rides and beaches will go unvisited by the British and American tourists.
