Home to an estimated one billion people, Africa is both the worlds second largest and second most populous continent. Comprising of fifty-four sovereign states (including Madagascar) it is a phenomenal explosion of multiculturalism, rich ethnic heritage and untapped beauty encompassing not only those who live on the continent but anyone belonging to the African Diaspora. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports that over 2000 languages are spoken throughout the continent and is still considered to be the oldest inhabited area on Earth. Being such a token of diversity and greatness, the continent has fallen victim to negative press for centuries, being described as a manifestation of starvation, civil war ,political, socio-economic and economic discourse to those who do not live there, while some who do believe that it is merely a victim of Western bias media. Nevertheless, to many “the horror, the horror’ of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness circa 1902 still prevails and has unfortunately come to define Mama Africa.
